Most of the times patients are not aware about the meanings of tests ordered by Doctors.
Here we are trying to be very brief about information yielded by few common tests.

Hemogram :

The test is baseline investigation for almost all check-ups.
One comes to know about Hemoglobin content, WBC counts-Total and differential , RBC counts, Platelet count, Peripheral smear examination . Hemoglobin tells whether anemia is there or not.WBC counts reflect whether there is any possibility of infection by increase or decrease in count. Differential count can explain- Type of infection, any abnormal cells , cellular features indicative of Sepsis or viral fever. It tells about possibility of allergic condition.

Platelet counts are important in diagnosis of Dengue, Malaria, Chicken Guinea , patients on Chemotherapy, blood and other cancers, defects in coagulation .Peripheral smear examination tells about morphology of red , white cells and platelets. It also can explain presence of malarial parasite if seen in that particular smear.Nowadays with the sophistication of cell counter information about blood indices as well as
Other parameters like MPV, RDW helps in defining hematological disorders.

Urine Routine :

Another commonest ordered test . This test explains about presence or absence
Of sugar, proteins, bile pigments ( for jaundice) as well as about pus cells, red blood cells, crystals
In the urine , other findings if any in microscopy. Thus it can provide information about urinary
Infections, stones, jaundice, diabetes, hypertension etc.

Blood sugar level

Another baseline test. The test can be performed as Fasting, Random , Post-prandial
(1 and ½ to 2 hrs following meal) or in any other matter directed by physician.
The test defines diabetic, non-diabetic, prediabetic phase of the patient.

Previously called as Glycosylated hemoglobin- This test gives an average sugar control
Ratio of last 120 days. Hence an important tool for diabetis follow-up. The test is specific and
Can be done even without fasting.

(Urinary microalbumin)- Long term diabetes can gradually lead to passage of proteins through Renal filtration system and lead to renal damage. Such proteins passed through urine can be Measured by this test.

Blood urea (BUL) :

This test indicates metabolic status of the body and also as a renal(kidney)
Function parameter.

S creatinine:

This is one of the important Kidney function test and is specific for renal assessment.

Electrolytes :

Human body has 3 important electrolytes which are NA- Sodium, K-Potassium and
CL-Chloride that maintain fluid equilibrium.

( Renal function tests) normally include BUL, CREATININE AND ELECTROLYTES.

Liver Function Tests (LFTS) :

These tests normally include Serum Bilirubin, SGPT also called AST, SGOT also called ALT , Alkaline phosphatase ( ALP) Serum Proteins and albumin.
GGT or Gamma GT is one more specific liver function test.

Lipid Profile :

These tests are important for preventive assessment of cardiac risk.
These include Serum Cholesterol, Serum Triglycerides, Serum HDL-Cholesterol, LDL cholesterol
VLDL cholesterol .
*For Lipid Profile a Fasting of 12-14 hrs is recommended. However water intake can be done.

Arthritis Profile :

Joint pains are investigated using these tests.
Uric acid, RA Factor, CRP and ASO come under this heading.

Coagulation screen:

These tests are requested as a preoperative requirement or investigating a bleeding disorder.
These include Platelet count, Bleeding time, Clotting Time, Prothrombin time (PT) and PTTK
Partial thromboplastin time with kaolin (also called as APPT).

Antenatal Screening (ANC Profile):

In a pregnant female its vey important to have a basic work-up investigated.
The tests include Hemogram, Blood group, Blood sugar, HIV screeing, Hepatitis B surface Ag(HbSAg)
VDRL , Urine routine.

Thyroid function tests:

These tests include T3 T4 TSH , FT3 AND FT4 ( FREE T3 AND FREE T4 –called as they are unbound forms
Of T3 and T4) . Also Thyroid antibodies that include AMA (Also called as ANTI-TPO) and ATG.

Torch test :

Test that helps in finding out the infection by certain viruses which can cause miscarriages in early
Pregnancy. The test includes assessment of IgG Antibodies ( suggestive of old infections)
And IgM antibodies (suggestive of recent infections). The viral infections tested in this test are

This test is performed in 2 nd trimester of pregnancy. The test is advised to be done between 16 to 18 wks of pregnancy. The test includes assessment of three blood parameters namely Beta Hcg, alpha feto proteins and E3 .These are correlated with the sonographic findings of the baby. For the
Purpose ultrasonography is needed to be done on the day of giving blood or a day before.
These all findings are then feeded to a specially designed software to obtain risk factors.
The risk are expressed against Trisomy 18, 21 and neural tube defect.
